Mit Drawing the Line Between Fact and Fiction
präsentiert Rocket Shop ZENTRALBUERO Werke von 8
deutschen und nordamerikanischen Künstlern und
Künstlerinnen. Die Arbeiten thematisieren die
Willkür von wissenschafltichen Methoden und die
fantastischen Aspekte von logischen Systemen. Die
künstlerischen Haltungen reichen von ironischer
Anspielung auf die "ernsthafte" Wissenschaft bis
hin zur zelebrierten Verwischungen von Realität
und persönlicher Wahrnehmung. Manche Werke
benutzen Bilder aus der wissenschaflichen
Fotografie und deuten dadurch auf dem
Science-Fiction entlehnte Szenarien.

Die Ausstellung zeigt fast ausschliesslich
Zeichnungen und Arbeiten auf Papier und setzt
damit eine Betonung auf die von Hand gezeichnete
Linie. Hierin liegt der visuelle Reiz der
Beiträge, die bewusst mit einer Low-tech Ästhetik
operieren. Während manche Arbeiten eine immanente
Kritik der Auswirkung von Wissenschaft und
Technologie auf die Gesellschaft beinhalten,
dienen andere als Huldigung der wissenschaflichen
Errungenschaften. Die Künstler und Künsterlinnen
der Ausstellung treffen sich nicht in der
Auffassung von Kunst als alternativen
wissenschaftlichen Methode sondern durch ihre
Fähigkeit die phänomenalen Aspekte der
alltäglichen Realität aufzugreifen.

Mittels der intuitiven und assoziativen Kraft der
Fiktion stellen die Arbeiten das Konstrukt der
Tatsache in Frage. Man liest in den Nachrichten:
"Spirit endeckte weitere Anzeichen von Wasser auf
Mars, Koreanische Wissenschaflter klonten erste
menschliche Embryos, Paul Allen - Mitgründer von
Microsoft - spendete neulich 13,5 Millionen
Dollar zur Forschung nach ausserirdischem Leben
im All" und man fragt sich, inwiefern der
Ursprung des wissenschafltichen Forschungstriebs
in einem gewissen Drang unserer Fantasie liegt.
Dabei ist es weit schwieriger als man zunächst
annimmt, eine Trennlinie zu ziehen.

With Drawing the Line Between Fact and Fiction
Rocket Shop presents the works of 8 German and
North American artists. Exploring the
arbitrariness of scientific method and
fantastical nature of logical systems, the works
range from tongue-in-cheek takes on "serious"
science to celebratory blends of fact and
personal perception. Others make use of the
magnified images of scientific photography in
works that call to mind Science Fiction scenarios.

The exhibition almost exclusively consists of
drawings and works on paper emphasizing the use
of the hand-drawn line. This is the basis of the
works' the visual appeal. The images are unique
and consciously low-tech. While some of the
artworks inherently express a critical view of
the impact of science and technology on our
society, others serve as an homage to scientific
achievement. What brings these artists together
is not an approach to art as an "alternate"
scientific method but their capacity to harvest
the phenomenal aspects of ordinary reality.

As a whole the works question the construct of
"fact" through the intuitive and associative
power of "fiction". When one reads the news -
that the Spirit has discovered new evidence of
water on Mars, Korean scientists have cloned the
first human embryo, and Paul Allen, cofounder of
Microsoft and science fiction fan, recently
donated 13.5 million dollars toward the research
of extraterrestrial life  - one asks to what
extent scientific exploration is born from an
ambitious drive of the imagination. Drawing the
line is not as easy as it may appear.
