Guckt mal, ob nicht einzelne Formulierungen noch geschickter gehen.
Mein Vorschlag:
Free Software and its best-known variety Linux is on everyone's lips
these days. Developed by thousands of individuals in self-organized
cooperation through the Net, Free Software equals [/exceeds] the quality
of competing commercial software from multi-billion corporations.
This phenomenon is both starting point and point of reference to the
debate in project Oekonux, where we discuss the implications of this
development. I'll give an introduction to the principles of Free
Software, explain the main arguments in this debate, and I'm particularly
looking forward to an exciting discussion.

Free software and society - the oekonx-debate<<
These days everyone is talking about free software, and especially
about its most prominent version, the operating system Linux.
Thousands of people have been and still are producing it in a
worldwide, self organized cooperation via the internet. Nevertheless
(or therefore?) free software reaches the quality of those competing
products commercially and expensively produced by the big software
companies.
This phenomenon is the point from which the debate in the Oekonux
project starts from and to which it keeps relating to. We will dicuss
the significance of this development. I will give an introduction into
the principles of free software and explain the most important
arguments in this debate and most importantly, I am looking forward to
an exciting, intense discussion.
